‘City of Dreaming Spires’ Trip

Wonderful day trip to the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’

A group of 17 Year 8 and 9 Gifted & Talented students went on a day trip to Oxford, where they discovered what university was, and why Oxford is so unique. They toured several famous colleges, enjoyed a picnic on the back lawn of Trinity College then went punting in the afternoon on the River Cherwell. The students, who are now in Year 9 and 10, went on the trip during the last week of the Summer Term.

English Teacher Dominic Jones, who himself went to Oxford as an undergraduate at Somerville College, and Maths Teacher Hannah Whittenham ran the trip.

Mr Jones said: “The weather was glorious, the students were exemplary, and the colleges were extremely generous in giving us the inside story.”

During the morning, students visited the Admissions Service and Somerville College. Afterwards they went to Trinity and Christ Church colleges, where they saw the dining hall used in the Harry Potter films. The afternoon was rounded off by an idyllic punt through Christ Church Meadows.

Miss Whittenham said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and clearly gained an important insight into life at a top university. The highlight for me was definitely seeing the Harry Potter hall!”

“The trip was a resounding success, and the school has established links with the Admissions Service and three colleges which we hope to build on next year.”
