On Thursday 14th February the girls key stage 3 badminton team of Chloe A, Rachel J, Mpumie N, Frances G and Chanel J travelled to Streetly Academy for the Walsall schools badminton final.
The team qualified by winning the previous round at Willenhall E-ACT Academy on November 28th.
The tournament was made up of two pools of three teams with the winning team from each pool moving on to contest the final for the chance to be named Walsall champions and represent Walsall at the Black Country Games.
West Walsall won their pool comfortably with excellent victories for Chloe in both singles and Doubles and Frances undefeated as a doubles player to make it through to the final to face the tournament hosts Streetly with some excellent badminton in their doubles and singles matches.
The final was a very tight affair with the number one ranked singles players separated by only 2 points. Unfortunately, in this game West Walsall were very unlucky not to win, however, some powerful shots from Rachel in the rank 2 match were too much for her opponent to handle and she brought the score level at one game all. The first of the doubles matches was again a close affair with Streetly winning to give them a 2-1 advantage with all to play for in the final 2 matches. Excellent teamwork from the pairing of Mpumie and Rachel brought a comfortable 6 point victory to level the tie at 2 wins all but unfortunately the deciding game was won by Streetly taking them through as Walsall champions and leaving West Walsall in a very close second place.
All the girls represented the school excellently with both the effort they showed in their game play and their superb conduct at the tournament and should be very proud of their performance. We wish Streetly Academy well in the Black Country games and hope they win the title for Walsall.
