Usmaan, our first word millionaire, was richly rewarded for his reading efforts with a trip to Waterstones booksellers in Walsall on Friday 23rd March.
Accompanied by Head Teacher Mr Hubble and Vulnerable Group Co-ordinator Ms Taggart, Usmaan was treated beyond his wildest dreams. In return for his gigantic reading success, Waterstones’ manager David Kelly, allowed Usmaan to choose a selection of books to the value of £20. The shrewd boy made full use of the ‘Buy one get one half price’ offer and pocketed himself 7 books, including titles by Jacqueline Wilson and David Walliams amongst others. When asked what he was going to do with all of the books he had received, he told teachers at WWEA that he planned to read them and then share them with his siblings.
The fun did not stop there though. Usmaan was totally taken by surprise, when Mr Hubble then presented him with a brand new ‘Amazon Kindle’ – e-book. Usmaan was speechless and said that he had always wanted one of those. His first e-book download is ‘Gangsta Granny’ which is ‘A hilarious and moving story of old age, adventure, stolen jewels and swimming the Thames,’ by David Walliams (Little Britain).
To conclude this memorable occasion for Usmaan, he was photographed together with Mr Hubble and his English teacher Mr Jones at the entrance to the school. Mr Jones, who is extremely proud of Usmaan, said ‘He is a true inspiration to the other pupils in his class, who are reading avidly to try to catch up with him.’
It seems that it won’t be long now before other ‘star readers’ find themselves making a reward trip to Waterstones.
