To celebrate the International Week of the Deaf, an annual event held during the last week of September, we challenged our year 8 students to be able to hold a conversation using British Sign Language.
Not only did they excel at the challenge, many of the students went on to work in their groups and prepare a short presentation in Sign Language on other topics they had researched, such as numbers, colours, pets, weather terms.
“The 2 lessons of sign language were quite challenging. I know how to hold a conversation and all of the alphabet, and would love to do sign language again.” (Kennedy)
“My cousin is deaf, so it was interesting to learn how he speaks every day.
I enjoyed learning the alphabet.” (Amy)
“I learnt the alphabet and numbers up to 20. I now know them off by heart.” (Ashley)
