World Food Day is a day of action against hunger. On October 16th, people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. To celebrate World Food Day, the World Studies Faculty have created themed lessons to deliver to key stage 3 students, across Geography, History, Religious Studies and Modern Foreign Languages. On Tuesday 9th June, 90 year 5 pupils came to the academy from Alumwell Juniors for a day of MFL. Miss Dubois, Mr Watt and Miss Daniels along with some wonderfully helpful year 9 volunteers ran sessions on Mexican traditions, British Sign Language and French-speaking countries. We made some ‘ojo de Dios’ (eye of God) to ward away evil spirits, learnt about where in the world people speak French (it isn’t just France!) and performed our own conversations all in sign language. Very very early one cold Sunday morning in March, we set off from the Academy with 29 students on an adventure to the sunny coast of Spain. MFL Murder Mystery Day – 21st January 2015 at Lingua Hillcrest, Hillcrest School, Birmingham Today, we went to Hillcrest School to solve a murder mystery. We became French investigators for the day. We were in separate groups, we also had different roles such as; forensic scientist, superintendent, crime officer and detectives. On Wednesday 15th October 14 year 9 students went to Birmingham University for a ‘Languages Masterclass’ where they got the chance to experience what it might be like to learn French, German and even Chinese at university. The MFL department celebrated the European Day of Languages on the 26th September by entering Aston University’s poster competition. The competition was very successful and the quality of posters entered was outstanding. Winners include: KS4 ~ Rebecca Dilger (1st), NayeemHussain (2nd), Gemma Nealen (3rd) KS3 ~ Amber Bailey (1st), Tia Ollerhead (2nd), Carla Goode (3rd) These winning entries have now been sent to Aston University to enter the West Midlands competition.
