Mission Statement

The Modern Foreign Languages department aims to ensure that all students are able to understand and communicate to the best of their ability in a foreign language and that learners receive a positive, challenging and rewarding learning experience.

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

In year 7 students study French and Spanish, building on their prior language learning in primary school, then continue with one of these languages throughout Key Stage 3.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4, students may opt to continue studying either, or both, of these languages to GCSE.

With the introduction of the English Baccalaureate in Key Stage 4, higher achieving students will be required to study a GCSE in a Modern Foreign Languages . This could be French, Spanish or the student’s home language, for which exam support and guidance is provided.

Key Successes

Primary Liason: Links with local primary feeder schools help support Modern Foreign Languages delivery in these schools and enable a smooth transition for students when they join the academy. The annual Alumwell Junior School Modern Foreign Languages Day held at the academy is an example of the collaborative work between our two schools.

University Trips: These have included a year 11 revision day at Aston University, a year 10 French animation day and a year 8 Formula 1 Marketing Day both at the University of Wolverhampton.

Exchange Links: We are fortunate to host a foreign language assistant and have successful links with schools in France and Spain. During the course of the year we have exchanged letters, pamphlets about our respective towns and video recordings with these schools. This on-going collaborative work enables students to use their language skills for a real purpose.

Trips to France: Trips to Disneyland Paris and the Opal Coast have been extremely successful with Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students.

Read about the trip to Disneyland Paris in July 2013.

Modern Foreign Languages Club: A weekly after school club enables students to request one to one support from the language teachers and also provides the opportunity for students to independently study a language of their choice using websites and with support from the staff.
